About

The Rajya Sainik Board, West Bengal is the apex state-level organisation responsible for the post retirement documentations, welfare, resettlement and rehabilitation of Ex-Servicemen (ESM), war widows and their dependents residing in West Bengal.

The origin of the Board dates back to 22 March 1945, when the Bengal Provincial Sailors’, Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Board was established during the final phase of 2nd World War to address the emerging welfare needs of military personnel and their families. This makes it one of the oldest military veteran welfare institutions in India.

After Independence and reorganisation of the State, the Board was reconstituted as State Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen Board and later renamed as Rajya Sainik Board and formally became a Directorate under the Department of Home & Hill Affairs, Govt of West Bengal in September 1967.

The Board functions in close coordination with the Kendriya Sainik Board (Ministry of Defence, Govt of India) and oversees the functioning of Zila Sainik Boards across 14 districts of the State, ensuring providing identity to ESM and their dependants, effective post retirement documentations, redressal of grievances of ESM/ serving military personnel and implementation of State/ Central Govt welfare policies at the grassroots level.
